I got this out of Woking (the Shanghai of Surrey) library to augment my poor art history knowledge and acquire more about the period of history where the church had a monopoly on fine art and architecture then on and I ploughed through to page 200 earlier giving up because it was so monotonous. There are but so many trefoils and narthexes and basilicas and cruciforms and liturgical east ends (which I don't think the cast of the BBC soap opera Eastenders live in) and radiating chapels and transepts an I got this out of Woking (the Shanghai of Surrey) library to augment my poor art history knowledge and larn more than about the period of history where the church had a monopoly on art and architecture and so on and I ploughed through to page 200 before giving upward because it was so monotonous. At that place are only and so many trefoils and narthexes and basilicas and cruciforms and liturgical due east ends (which I don't call up the bandage of the BBC lather opera Eastenders live in) and radiating chapels and transepts and quires and ambulatories that a human being can stomach at one sitting without reaching for an overdose of Negroni Spritz. There is nil incorrect with the church'southward monopoly so much but I suppose I am interested in the Reformation and the translation of the Bible into the colloquial and the Aesopian tortoise slow process of people thinking for themselves nearly religion and art and gradually getting on with making disparate and multiplicitous artwork instead. I have been lured in by a volume on the Arts and Crafts move instead and no offence to Janetta Rebold Benton, her analysis is fantabulous and forensic simply it all got a bit too much for me. It was similar existence stuck in a solarium with a Trappist monk and no boob tube for 57,000 years - no offence to the monk but a bit on the dull side of the equation. Past the way here's my Nobel Prize non-winning blog which I mention in every review because I am a monomaniac: http://devereuxmatthew.wordpress.com ...more

This book suites my Common Reader point of view. The framework information technology sets upward is a good showtime for visiting the Gothic Cathedrals beyond Europe.

This was dandy and a handy companion to the evening course I'one thousand taking in Gothic Art/Architecture. The book was packed total of examples and pictures of what the text was talking about (some were black and white e.g. the cathedral interiors, merely most of the more than detailed ones of eastward.m. jewelled reliquaries were in color).

There are chapters separating out topics, but within the chapters the text didn't dwell as well long on any detail element, it skipped along nicely from 1 example to the next.

This was nifty and a handy companion to the evening course I'one thousand taking in Gothic Art/Compages. The book was packed full of examples and pictures of what the text was talking nigh (some were black and white e.k. the cathedral interiors, but nearly of the more detailed ones of e.1000. jewelled reliquaries were in colour).

There are chapters separating out topics, but within the capacity the text didn't dwell also long on any particular element, it skipped along nicely from one instance to the side by side.

The style of the writing was also skilful: information technology wasn't dry or difficult to understand. Information technology was easy to follow, only without feeling dumbed downwards. If others in this World of Fine art serial are the same, I may well seek them out as I constitute this both interesting and accessible.

This book is dandy if y'all want to know more near mediëval art. I wanted to do a bit of research for my students job this summer and this book is perfect to get an introduction.
Now I know where to get-go adjacent and know the deviation between all styles and their importance.
